Summer Hair Tips From the Pros

07/31/2011

It can be difficult to manage your hair, especially with all of the sun, rain and humidity we've been dealing with in Chicago. Two of Chicago's top hair stylists, Michael Jacobson of Michael & Michael Salon, and A.J. Johnson of AJES Salon, stopped by to give us a few tips.

Michael's Tips:
-Do your best to keep hair healthy! The more damaged the hair is, the more it will be affected by the weather.
-Use anti-humectant products which seal the cuticle and help to prevent moisture form into the hair
-Protect hair from the sun by using products with UVA/UVB protection (or wear hats if you can!)
-Use very loose pony tails to alleviate tension on the hair, especially if it is chemically treated
-NO rubber bands! Instead use a bungee or other cloth coated hair band to pull back your hair
-Apply a keratin product before exposure to chlorine. This will protect your cuticle by reducing how porous it is, thereby minimizing the ability of chlorine to penetrate the cuticle
-If you're going to use a flat-iron, make sure to use a thermal protectant spray

Michael's Product Recommendations:
-Impermeable Anti-Humidity Hair Spray by Oribe
-Soft Lacquer Hair Spray by Oribe
-Intense Curl Cream by MoroccanOil
-Straight Day Keratin Enhanced Styling Spray by Keratin Complex
-Magic Moves Pomade by Shinbi

A.J.'s Tips:
-Before exposing hair to chlorine, Black women should moisturize their hair with a moisturizing conditioner
-After exposure to chlorine, cleanse the hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove chlorine and bring the hair back to the normal pH balance. (No, chlorine will not strip off the relaxer or color!)
-Weaves are a great option for the summer months because it gives the hair a rest from the daily grind. After you shampoo, make sure the braids are completely dry. Damp braids are detrimental to your natural hair and will lead to damage.
-If you have longer hair, pull your hair back into a chignon as a guard against humidity.

A.J.'s Product Recommendations:
- A.J. Johnson Hair Care Intense Penetrating Masque
-A.J. Johnson Moisture-Rich Conditioner
-Brilliant Anti-Humectant Pomade by Aveda
-Moisture Shield Hair Guard by Namaste
-Humidity Resistant Mist by Mizani
